In keeping with its commitment to support the specialty’s academic sector, the OMS Foundation hosted a free Lunch & Learn for OMS faculty at the 2022 AAOMS Annual Meeting. With a substantial and attentive audience, the program addressed a challenge experienced by faculty in every medical discipline: how to identify, enroll and retain the best residency candidates.
Dr. Mara Schenker, Chief of Orthopedics at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, referenced candidate selection strategies used by Google, McKinsey & Co., the Navy SEALs and the NFL during her talk. She emphasized the importance of quantifying the metrics of success in a specific field and targeting hiring processes to identify candidates likely to meet those standards. Dr. Schenker, also an Associate Professor at the Emory University School of Medicine, downplayed the value of standardized tests, class rankings and unstructured interviews.
The OMS Foundation is accepting Lunch & Learn topic suggestions for future meetings.
